Is it rated?

Some tournaments are rated and will affect your rating.

How are scores calculated?

A win has a base score of 2 points, a draw 1 point, and a loss is worth no points.
If you win two games consecutively you will start a double point streak, represented by a flame icon.
The following games will continue to be worth double points until you fail to win a game.
That is, a win will be worth 4 points, a draw 2 points, and a loss will still not award any points.
For example, two wins followed by a draw will be worth 6 points: 2 + 2 + (2 × 1)

Arena Berserk

When a player clicks the Berserk button at the beginning of the game, they lose half of their clock time, but the win is worth one extra tournament point.
Going Berserk in time controls with an increment also cancels the increment. (1+2 is an exception, it gives 1+0)
Berserk is not available for games with zero initial time (0+1, 0+2).
Berserk only grants an extra point if you play at least 7 moves in the game.

How is the winner decided?

Lincoln Casino Tournament Lobby

The player(s) with the most points at the conclusion of the tournament's set time limit will be announced winner(s).
When two or more players have the same number of points, the tournament performance is the tie break.

How does the pairing work?

At the beginning of the tournament, players are paired based on their rating.
As soon as you finish a game, return to the tournament lobby: you will then be paired with a player close to your ranking. This ensures minimum wait time, however you may not face all other players in the tournament.
Play fast and return to the lobby to play more games and win more points.

How does it end?

The tournament has a countdown clock. When it reaches zero, the tournament rankings are frozen, and the winner is announced. Games in progress must be finished, however they don't count for the tournament.

Other important rules.

Liberty Slots Mobile Tournament Lobby

There is a countdown for your first move. Failing to make a move within this time will forfeit the game to your opponent.

Drawing the game within the first 10 moves will earn neither player any points.

Draw streaks: When a player has consecutive draws in an arena, only the first draw will result in a point, or draws lasting more than 30 moves. The draw streak can only be broken by a win, not a loss or a draw.

Lobbies

Tenhou is split up into lobbies, which are simply waiting rooms for games. Players can only play with other players in the same lobby, and can only watch games from the lobby they were created in. Lobbies are identified by numbers, usually prefixed with an L (i.e. L7447, L8000, etc.).

All lobbies other than L0000 are unranked.

Creating Lobbies

To create a lobby, go to 個室作成 (create private room) and pick the 個室ロビーの作成 (create private lobby) option. This gives you a free lobby with an ID between 1000 and 7999 (generated randomly). Lobbies below and above, respectively, are reserved. There is a private lobby log from the last 24 hours showing the games played, too.

Key Lobbies

Tournament Lobbies

Tenhou tournaments have a lot to them. Creation is similar to the procedure for making a private lobby, although you pick the 大会ロビーの作成 (create tournament lobby) option instead. More information is in the championship section.

Games

There are 6 types of game available to play on Tenhou:
NameDescription
喰断ナシNashiNo open tanyao
喰断アリAriOpen tanyao allowed
喰アリ赤Ari redAri with red fives
喰アリ赤速Ari red fastAri with red fives and half time on turns
三喰アリ赤3-man Ari redAri with red fives and only 3 players
三喰赤速3-man Ari red fast3-man Ari with red fives and half time on turns

The two round types (the columns) are tonpuusen (東風戦) -- East only round; and tonnansen (東南戦) -- East and South rounds.

Once upon a time there was also a highlighted mode that would grey out tiles that were immediately discarded after drawing them, in players' ponds. It was removed because people complained about it, though.

Joining games is done by clicking which mode you wish to play in the above table. The pushed down buttons indicate which games you are waiting for, or queued for. Games start when there are three other people (or two, in the case of 3-man) queued. To leave the queue(s), click the キャンセル (cancel) button in the bottom right of the box. The x:y numbers next to each game type show players queued:players in-game.

Lobby Features

Official and tournament lobbies differ from private lobbies in a few ways. Below is a table showing the differences:

Lobby Stats

At the top of the lobby window there are three figures. From left to right: total players connected (globally, not just per lobby); total idle/waiting players (per lobby); players in their last round (per lobby).

The text beneath the tabs also shows the modifiers for the game type being hovered over.

Game Ranks

You can be selective in who you play, too. On the lobby window there's tabs for three game ranks. Different game ranks require different user ranks to play. Choose by the tabs.

From left to right, the tabs are:
General room (all players of all ranks), Dan room (registered players with dan rank), Upperdan room (registered players with, at least, dan rank of 4 and rate of 1800), Upperdan spectate, Past game spectate, Help.

Menu

On the lobby window there's also a menu with assorted things in it. They are listed below.

  1. Replay List of past matches (see: Replays)
  2. Lobbies Common official lobbies (see: Lobby Menu)
  3. Minigames (see: Minigames)
  4. Reset Settings Clear all replay records and computer-specific preferences. Not a great idea since it clears all the replay links.
  5. Purchase Account Buy an ID for fancy things like the Windows client (see: Purchasing an ID)
  6. Logout

Minigames

Tenhou also has various minigames that you can play from the minigame droplist:

  1. Puzzle 1

This is your classic Mahjong solitaire game. You slide off matching tiles to the left or right until you clear the field. There's up to 5 levels and also a level editor:

It gives you a small text editor to make a field. The syntax is:

    • . for a blank space
    • o for a tile (randomly generated)
    • Maximum of 136 tiles
    • Number of used tiles must be a multiple of four (4)
    • The bottom layer goes first, the next layer after that, and so on
    • Layers are delimited by two new lines
An error will come up if there is something wrong with what you've made.
  2. Puzzle 2

This game involved matching tiles together that have clear paths between them. Paths can have up to two turns in them.

  3. Practice Mahjong

Given a set of tiles, make a hand out of them as fast as possible. This game has a Time Attack mode and a limitless mode, which you select in the menu. You can also pick how many tiles you get at the start.

Test Play

You can also play against computers if you want to practise. Although they have no difficulty setting you can pick 3 types of game:

  2. Ari Red
